Personally, I thought that wasn’t such a bad thing. I was happy to dive in headfirst, to find out right away what it means to be at the front of the room. I knew I had something important to say, and I felt like I could connect with my students. After all, I was only a few years past the SAT myself. But I did, like I know so many teachers do, feel a bit lost sometimes. Teaching isn’t an easy job, not if you’re invested in it. And while I won’t go so far as to say teaching the SAT is more difficult than teaching traditional school subjects, it’s absolutely true that it’s a unique thing to teach. Know Why You’re There Everybody knows that teachers are there to â€Å"make a difference† and â€Å"have an impact,† right? It’s trite, but it’s true. Al and Max then tied up Nick and Sam, two workers at the diner, while threatening George. The two hitmen waited for Ole Anderson to appear and when he never did, they both left the diner. In order to understand the motives of the characters, we can use Sigmund Freud’s theory to unravel their behaviors. We can explain the characters’ behavior by using various concepts proposed by Freud, such as the personality structures (id, ego, and superego) and defense mechanisms. Al and Max looked almost the same. They were of the same size and dressed like twins. Ego is the rational part of the personality that deals pragmatically with reality. It is the seat of reason, rationality, and logic. Abraham Lincoln Essay Abraham LincolnAbraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. He served from 1861- 1865. People referred to him as Honest Abe. During the Civil War Lincoln helped with the North, in doing this the North selected him for a second time in 1864. In all of his time he never wavered from his primary goal- to save the Union and also he saw the nation through its most dreadful experience, war between Americans. In the beginning- Abraham was born on February 12, 1809. Him ad his family moved a couple of times from place to place. With helping on the farm and managing to get in some schooling at a local school. He learned how to read and write. His full size grew to be 64. The middle years- In 1832, as a captain of the Militia Company, he went off to the Black Hawk War. Soon after the War he ran for the Illinois legislature and lost. Afterward with a partner, he opened his own general store but went broke. In 1834, as a Whig, he was elected to the legislature and served fo ur terms. But in the meantime, he read enough law to finally become a lawyer and in 1837 he moved to Springfield. Here he attended legislative sessions, practiced law, and met his future wife. Family life- Abrahams wife was Mary Todd; she was a Kentucky born girl. They were soon married on November 4, 1842. They had together four kids, Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas. But Edward died shortly before his fourth birthday, William died in the White House of typhoid at only age eleven, and also son Thomas died in 1871 at age eighteen right before adulthood. Being the President- In 1846, Lincoln won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served up until 1849, then returned to Springfield. In the 1850s he returned to politics. He spoke out against slavery extension. In 1856 he became a Republican. Two years later he ran for U.S. Senate, but lost however. He won the President nomination on the third ballot and won. He was elected President on November 6, 1861. In November 1863, Lincoln dedicated the Gettysburg battlefield, in a short speech known as the Gettysburg Address. It summed up the Civil War and its meaning to the Americans. On January 1, 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Which played a huge part in the Norths resurgence. This declared that slaves in the Confederacy were free. The end of the Civil War came at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. THE ASSIGNATION- One night while Lincoln and Mary went out to watch a play at Fords Theater on April 14, 1865; actor John Wilkes Booth shot him during the play. He died at 3:22 A.M. the following day. The funeral train began on April 21 on its journey to Illinois. Lincoln was buried in Springfield on May 4, 1865.

These similarities are evident in the love stories Eros Psyche, a Greco-Roman myth, and Beauty and the Beast, a motion picture by Disney Pictures Inc. in their themes and the actions and emotions of their characters. First of all, the theme of fidelity/faith is in both stories. In the story of Cupid Psyche, Cupid charges Psyche with the challenge to never look upon his face. He gives her no reason for this order, so Psyche must perform an act of blind faith. But, out of curiosity, she breaks their pact and looks upon his face at night. This is similar to Belles curiosity over the West Wing of the castle, in Beauty The Beast. The Beast tells Belle to never, under any circumstances, venture to the West Wing. Like Cupid, he gives his lover no reason for this, except that its forbidden! Belle, too, had to perform an act of blind faith, but broke her lovers rule by going up to the West Wing to view its forbidden contents. Secondly, the human characteristic of fearing the unknown is presented by the characters in both stories. In the story of Beauty the Beast, the common people of Belles town react to the Beast with fear, drawing wild assumptions about his personality based on his appearance. The same situation is presented in the story of Cupid Psyche. Psyches sisters, upon hearing that she has been forbidden to look on the face of her husband, automatically fear him. They assume that the reason she is not allowed to see him is that he is a hideous monster, too ashamed to be seen in daylight. Also, in both stories, the protagonist-lovers suffer the pains of forbidden love, and eventually overcome the hardships others put them through. In the story of Cupid Psyche, Psyche is not allowed to marry Cupid because he is an immortal god. Aphrodite, Cupids mother and antagonist to Psyche, enforces this rule, forcing her to suffer many labors. She completes these labors and joins her lover as an immortal. Similarly, in Beauty the Beast, the local villagers in Belles native town disapprove of her love for the Beast, and seek to make it very hard for them to marry each other. But, Beast and Belle smite the figureheads of the angry mob and join each other in holy matrimony. In both Beauty The Beast and Cupid Psyche, one of the lovers was afraid that the other would be frightened of their appearance. In the story of Cupid Psyche, Cupid fears that if his bride sees him, she will be frightened and overwhelmed by his splendor, as he is the God of Sweet, Erotic Love. This same fear is shown in Beauty The Beast, when the Beast grows fearful and puts on a front of spitefulness when he is intimidated by Belles grace. He feels deficient. Also, in both stories, the characters undergo a physical and mental change as the story progresses. In Beauty the Beast, the Beast is transformed from a pompous, arrogant prince into a hideous, self-loathing beast, then to a handsome, benevolent man. In Cupid Psyche, Psyche transformed from a mortal into an immortal by eating the bread of the gods. In both cases, the characters became much the wiser after their ordeals. Therefore, parallels can be drawn between all types of mythology, from the written word to the theatre; spoken tales to the silver screen. Are technology and the media shedding the very fabric of the existence we have known? As technology and the media spread their influence, the debate over the inherent advantages and disadvantages intensifies. Although opinions vary widely on the subject, two writers offer similar views: Professor Sherry Turkle, director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, in her article â€Å"Can You Hear Me Now† and Naomi Rockler-Gladen, who formerly taught media studies at Colorado State University, with her article â€Å"Me Against the Media: From the Trenches of a Media Lit Class.† Turkle asserts that technology has changed how people develop and view themselves, while at the same time affecting their concepts of time management and focus (270). Similarly, Rockler-Gladen believes media and its inherent advertising have had a profound effect on the values and thinking of the public (284). I could not agree more with Professor Turkle and Ms. Rockler-Gladen; the effects tech nology and media have worried and annoyed me for quite so time. The benefits of technology and media are undeniable, but so then are the flaws. People are beginning to shift their focus away from the physical world to the virtual world as they find it easier and more comfortable. The intended purpose of technology and media was to be a tool to improve the quality of life, not shackles to tie people to their devices. I no longer recognize this changed world and long for the simple world of my youth. Turkle argues that technology has fundamentally changed how people view themselves and their lives (271). She reports that, â€Å"BlackBerry users describe that sense of encroachment of the device on their time. One says, ‘I don’t have enough time alone with my mind’; another, ‘I artificially make time to think†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Ã¢â‚¬  (274). Her point is that people have to make a deliberate choice to disconnect, to exist in their own mind rather than the virtual world (Turkle 274). Another point Turkle brings up is that in this technologic age children are not learning to be self- reliant. Without having the experience of being truly alone and making their own decisions, children are not developing the skills they once did (Turkle 274). As Turkle reports, â€Å"There used to be a moment in the life of an urban child, usually between 12 and 14, when there was a first time to navigate the city alone. It was a rite of passage that communicated, ‘you a re on your own and responsible.
